Hello

Currently on my laptop I use Windows Vista (I got this laptop in april 2009)

I am working on getting a new PC or laptop. And I was thinking about what windows to use?

I really like how easy Vista is to use, though I suppose I am used to it by now, Some programs I use for simple video editing I dont think are compatible for Windows 8 which is pushing me more towards windows 7

has anybody got and advice on either OS?

Thank you

You would be hard pressed to buy a lappy with Win 7 installed on it, unless you get a seocond hand one.

If you lappy came with Vista more than likely it would run Win 7. Source a copy and try.

If you built your own PC you would be able to put what ever OS you fancied, even MAC OS X.

I dont know what video editting app you using but to date I have not come accross any software that would not run in Vista and Win 7. If yours does not it would probebly time to update your app.

Hope this helps you out.

I personally do not like Windows 8.

Only one way to find out if you do and that is to try it.

Thanks for the info

Its a custom built laptop I was thinking of getting so I can choose my OS lol. Ive just read everywhere that Windows 8 and 7 are 2 worlds apart. Like I said I enjoy Vista, but win 8 would be a mega change to me. Which is why I am thinking win7 is more like vista in terms of layout and setup

Use Windows 8 if you are buying new hardware. It's worth buying a copy of Start8 or StartIsBack if you do not like the metro UI.

windows 8.1 is great, not missed a single thing from 7 - the whole start menu thing has been hyped way over the top by people not interested in change.

win 7 and win 8 are both fine, can't go wrong with either.

I would go Win8 for sure(actually I did on three PCs ),why go with an old OS like Win7 which is already 5 years old and security not as good as Win8/8.1,Win8.1 can behave like Vista and Win7 etc for the most part desktop wise ,you have Microsoft Store which has a lot of free and paid stuff on offer, the old Start menu is not an issue since its coming back down the road and you have free third party versions like Classic Shell etc available.

End of the day video editing is not an issue since plenty of free and paid software available for Win8/8.1.

I was a Vista/Win7 owner myself, more then happy with Win8.1,learning curve is far from hard as some people make out,I think the speed increase and new features/improved security should make you happy especially over Vista(I actually liked Vista btw).

Windows 8 ignore the other people, as they won't be able to give you a sensible reason.

There's no reason not to go win8, it's a darn good o's. And as said there's always startisbavk if you can't cope with change. But give it a go for at least a fortnight before installing said things. You have to give it time to reset muscle memory and learn it.

Another advantage for Win8/8.1 over Vista/Win7 is improved battery life on laptops as well, that's been improved, throw in better DX support(getting DX 11.2 down the road) then what Vista/Win7 has, basically no point using Win7 unless you can think of a good excuse,so far all the ones in this thread have been very lame like fonts etc..

Sure, thats really helpful on a laptop. I expect everyone uses it as their primary gaming machine.

Unless its a touchscreen stick with Win 7 you'll save yourself endless hassle installing StartIsBack, Start8, etc.

You forget my other previous remarks ie improved battery performance, security etc, longer life span ,even your humble Win7 can't match that, .

Btw he did say

So that covers a wide area so yes maybe gaming is important to him on a PC or laptop.

I do wish people would not cling onto the past, especially when even Win7 is getting bit long in the tooth.

What hassle?...If you can't handle simple Win8/8.1 then that says it all, touchscreen remark is pure FUD ,typical Win7 user remark that does not have a clue .

I use laptop as main gaming machine. Don't even have a desktop anymore. Although I do sometimes plug monitor k/m in on the desk.
It hasn't got a touch screen
W8 works great
And you couldn't pay me to use startisback or similar.

Which I could disable the new close button in metro apps, as even with a mouse it's easier and quicker swiping down.

Metro offers many apps that offer a far better experience than the desktop versions. And desktop offers many apps better than meteo. Use both, it's hardly inconvenient.

im using 8.1 at home and using 8.1 and 7 at work. i like windows 8 and once you get to grips with it it is actually more benificial to use.

This. Windows 8 is an improvement over 7. 8,1 from what I've seen so far (only been using it about a week) it's another positive improvement.

There is only 1 reason to use 7 and that is if something isn't compatible.

I can highly recommend Windows 8, embrace the change. The latest updates (including 8.1) have corrected a number of problems with the initial release.

Not sure about that. It's faster than Windows 7, but I don't know if that counts as beneficial or not.

I don't mind the lack of a start menu. In terms of use, it's no slower than Windows 7 (I still just press the start key, start typing and hit the enter key to launch a program) and the start menu just acts as a slab for my most commonly used programs (I've unpinned the metro apps).

Microsoft are bringing it back in an upcoming update, but if you can't wait, just install one of the third party start menus for now. The speed benefits and non-Metro UI improvements (Task Manager, Explorer, etc) are worth it.

Worthy of a Windows 7 upgrade? Debatable. Buying from scratch? Go Windows 8.

for me i find it cleaner, in that my apps go to the side bar out of the way, you can snap thing to different parts of the screens better then windows 7 specialy over multi screens.

Curious, is anyone still on Windows 8 vanilla? and at what point will you be forced...

I've one of my PC s which has an old Athlon XP 3800+x2 CPU and nforce 4 Ultra board that has vanilla Win8 Pro x64 which can't be upgraded due to instruction set not supported with Win8.1 x64 unless I reformat and go Win8.1 x86.

Info here http://www.eteknix.com/windows-8-1-64-bit-working-old-amd-processors/

I'll make it a full Linux PC at some point down the road.
