Windows 7 - Windows XP File Sharing

I am currently having a problem trying to use Windows 7's hideously difficult network interface. I am having trouble getting my Windows 7 box and XP box to share files across the network, I have them set up on the same Workgroup but that does not seem to be helping. Windows 7 cannot ping XP and vice versa.

In Windows 7, I have set the shares using Advanced sharing function because the normal share... feature is greyed out, presumably because it cannot find other computers/Win7 boxes on the network and I have set up the advanced sharing options appropriately. In windows XP I have tried turning off Simple File Sharing in an attempt to see if that works but I still cannot get the two computers to communicate.

I have also spent a while searching google looking for solutions but none of those seem to have helped much.

This is really aggravating me, if someone knows how to get a Windows7 box to talk to an XP box, please tell me.

yea i remember when i tried to network xp and windows vista.

i had to do a registry hack on the XP machine to get it to work, even then i had to go directly to the ip address, even after changing the work group.

this is the backwards compatibility that microsoft goes on about.

I've got a winXP pro PC and a Win 7 Pro machine networked with no problems.

what versions of each windows do you have? if you have XP home you might struggle
