the activation server determined that the specific product key could not be used.

yeah that option pops up but i HATE phoning any company (brought on by endless screaming down the phone to BT) and its just put me off, i'll give them a ring in the morning and sort it out hopefully.

is this due to it counting as a change in pc? i heard u can change most parts but if u change a mobo then in MS eyes thats a pc change? or something like that.

A motherboard change will most likely require Windows to reactivate. Never worry about phoning as I have done it many times and only ever get an automated vocie that guides you through the process. :)

The microsoft activation helpline is automated however if you do need to speak to someone just hold on the line whilst the options are played out - theyll go through twice and then you be automatically transferred to a real person.

Just remember to say you replaced a broken motherboard if they ask. Not read Windows 7 EULA yet, but with XP you needed a new licence when you upgraded.

Is this a personal MSDN or company MSDN, as if company then maybe that other people have already activated to the limit.

Of course as its a MSDN download then is for your development machine to allow you to develop and test your products compatibility with Windows 7.

I know that happened at our place for some licenses.

its personal, i get loads of free software from MS as i am doing a computing course at uni, and this was one of those bits of software. just tried over the phone, automated service didnt work so i was put through to a humie who said our systems are currently not working can you call back in 15-25 minutes. it was very simple and easy though despite their problems.

ok i got it activated over the phone, the MS help people were very good, i was impressed by the whole prcedure which took only 2 minutes. thanks for your help guys!
