Just finished building my new pc and was trying out some other OS. (linux mint 8, pre-activated torrent version of windows 7 ultimate)
I then wiped the hdd when i got windows 7 (retail), and changed bios order to cd/dvd. I then got this message:

GRUB loading.
error: no such disk
grub rescue>

Inserted Windows 7 (retail) and it did not recognize it. Other OS where recognized so installed windows 7 ultimate (pre-activated) then inserted windows 7 (retail) which was eventually recognized then installed it, deleting the previous OS. Seems to be working fine.

However i still cant boot from windows 7 (retail).
I just get the message saying select other boot device/insert bootable cd.

Any advice would be most appreciated, im really scared that it will muck up seeing as the 1st OS was pirated/pre-activated.

Sounds like the Retail disc you have is broken. Is it an official MS disc or did you create it yourself from a [legal] web download?

It is an official windows 7 retail version bought from a shop. It's not broke as it booted normally in my laptop. I think its something to do with the missing grub.

It shouldn't have anything to do with it. GRUB is on your HDD, you are booting from the CD/DVD ROM drive. The fact you are getting a GRUB message means the BIOS cannot boot from the Windows disc due to disc error, drive error or you have the boot order wrong in the BIOS.

Or you're being prompted to "press any key to boot from CD" and missing that message.

Lastly - DVD drive? If it's not the DVD then it could be the drive, don't suppose it's old is it?
