My fried recently decided to build a Core 2 Quad Q9400 set up, now I thought he had bought a new ddr3 motherboard but it turns out he bought a refurbished ddr2 motherboard as he had bought the parts bit by bit over time (as advised by my other friend). Now windows 7 will not install via DVD drive he tells me, something about drivers? I will have more info tomorrow but I have a few questions.

1)any chance windows will install from a USB Drive?
2)could the motherboard be faulty in some way?
3)what drivers could be missing?
4)could it be to do with the BIOS?

thanks in advance

What is the exact error message?

I have never seen Windows 7 not be able to progress an install based on drivers, not unless it was some really obscure drive controller!

Same here I've installed windows 7 on 6/7 year old stuff np, but i do not know the exact error message until i go to his tomorrow afternoon ill post it up when i get it, or if i solve the problem

Yep, have a google for guides.

2)could the motherboard be faulty in some way?

Possibly, but if this was the case it'd be likely that he'd not get as far as setup.

3)what drivers could be missing?

Optical drives are generic, so at a guess, controller drivers?

4)could it be to do with the BIOS?

It could be, you could try enabling IDE mode for the controller if it supports it.

Why not download the SATA drivers from the manufacturer's site, and copy them to a USB stick and insert when prompted by W7 for drivers?

Load W7 setup from DVD, when prompted for drivers stick in the USB stick and point the setup there.

OK went there yesterday with a batch of new DVDs and a USB with win 7 on it, first tried win 7 but did not load up, restarted this time it loaded up fine but got stuck after the 1st screen for about 10 mins at this point I was puzzled. so I restarted went to BIOS went to dive options it was just set to SATA which i thought yeah everything is fine but there was another option of PATA+SATA which shouldn't make a difference as he is only using SATA drives but I thought what the hell lets give it a try. Then restarted PC started Windows 7 via DVD and it installed no problems.

Now even though Windows installed fine I am still puzzled as to what the issue was?
as I do not think changing that setting in the BIOS had any effect
