Hi, hope everyone had a good Christmas, After getting Windows 7 for Christmas I have been trying to install for the past three hours or so. My PC has had some strange issues for a while, this was the main reason for me installing Win 7, e.g. random errors something along the lines IRQL not less or equal. I decided to format my HDD and install a clean copy after this I popped the Windows 7 install disc in and booted it, this is where the problems start. The disc boots with the windows loading files screen and then I have to wait for literally 10 minutes on the blue windows 7 screen before I can choose any options. I then get to the installing screen and the expanding of files takes ages and the other things such as installing features take no time at all ( as if they weren't actually installed). It then restarts and then an error pops up saying an unexpected restart has occurred please restart the installation.

I have tried numerous things such as resetting my overclock, resetting cmos battery, installing with only one ram stick in and i have also swapped the ram sticks encase one was faulty. So what I want to know is what the hell is stopping me installing Windows 7, I had similar problems installing Vista for the second time. I think it could be the disc drive not working properly, as my ram is new and passed memtest a few months back. Any opinions on what is stopping the install would be brilliant.

I'd start with running memtest and a drive diagnostic to confirm that your memory and hard drive is good.

Dano surely then I would have had issues with Vista when it was installed, So can i just rip the windows 7 disc onto another pc and then drop it onto a USB stick? Then will plugging this into the computer cause it to boot and install, thanks for the help so far.

erm... from your opening post:

So yes.

I thought that IRQL error was to do with RAM, also wouldnt there be issues installing progras and so on. Is there any way to test the hard drive with no OS installed, and about that USB install would that be as simple as I said in my previous post?

Memtest86+, download the iso and burn a disc, no OS required on the test machine:

http://www.memtest.org/

Same will be true of your hard drive test but it'll depend on the maker as to which software you want to use, though hitachi's Drive fitness test is happy to test pretty much anything:

As for the USB install, there's a utility around from MS that will set it all up for you but I forget the name at the moment.

I tried the USB option still no luck, install takes ages to expand files then basically skips installing features. Will run both tests and come back with the results.

Yeah, to be honest I'd be looking at the hardware. I suggested the USB stick option as a bit of a long shot as you seemed to have looked at the hardware but time to look again.

I have run Memtest again on the one stick i was using for over 3 hours with no errors returned, I then ran that Hitatchi drive fitness test which took about 3 hours with the disposition code being 0x00 which apparently signals that there are no problems with the drive. So now that i have eliminated the Ram and HDD what else could it possibly be? Any way of checking the cpu without an OS?

Edit: Just left the computer running and Windows 7 loaded but after a few seconds i got the blue screen saying memory management or something along those lines which is apparently to do with hardware conflict and i havent installed any recently. Whats the best program to diagnose what the hell is going on?

I have 2x2Gb but I only have one in at the moment. Im really getting annoyed now nothing i do seems to work, and i cant actually figure out what is wrong with it.

Still no luck cant even load windows now an error comes up saying: restart occurred during setup please restart installation. Fro there I cant do anything apart from restart and see the same message. Is my Mobo or CPU screwed can I actually rely on memtest and hitatchi fitness test.

run the pc at stock but make sure the ram is set up correctly to the right voltages and timings.
Also try the had drive in a different sata port

Finally it worked!!! Thanks for the help and suggestions, I flashed the bios and updated it to the newest version and that seems to have sorted it right out. No Blue screen's or random errors so far (touch wood) and everything is working.

That was exactly the problem I had in this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18095278

I eventually managed to get Win 7 setup going, but it took AGES to expand files, and then eventually gave me a BSOD. Got the owner of the laptop to take it back for a refund as it was brand new.
