Windows 7 - Worth upgrading from Vista64 from a performance point of view?

Im happy with my Vista install from a functional point of view. I dont think there is anything from a feature point of view that I want/need from Windows 7 (My laptop has Windows 7 installed on it so I can compare), but Im getting some suggestions that changing to Windows 7 will give me some improvements in performance of some games, and more importantly, some video encoding.

Can I expect some improvements from a performance point of view on my rig currently? I will be updating once some newer processors are released (my Q6600 just doesnt want to die!) so if I do, can I buy retail Win7 and move it over to the newer rig? Can I sell off my mobo/processor with the current retail Vista64 OEM (as it is tied with this setup)?

Cheers in advance.

Bah..... was afraid of hearing this. I bought Win7 pro retail at launch for less than £60, had it lying around for months and sold it as i felt i didnt need it.

Surely with all the updates over the years, it must be up to Win7 for performance?

Now i will be buying at full price!
