Windows can support virtual cores. Otherwise there would be no point in buying a CPU with HT.
Windows 7 doesn't get any benefits from moving from 1 core to 2 cores. Rather it's the software you use if it can take advantage of the extra core.

Well if you leave the PC on idle only thing that would be running is the OS itself isn't it? And CPU load levels would only be around 0-1% odd. I suppose more cores does help but Windows itself only runs about 40 processes which doesn't even use that much CPU power.
