Hi all,

I'm having a bit of a problem with Windows 7 RC build 7100. I have installed four times from two different DVDs. Everytime I install everything goes through fine with no errors.

When it boots in to Windows for the first time I am left with a black screen with just cursor. I have been into safe mode, logged in, then rebooted into normal mode. After this it lets me log in as normal but with a grey taskbar but wont let me run anything or go to control panel. The only thing I can do is get task manager up.

I shut down the explorer.exe process and restarted it in administrator mode and everything comes up normal.

Has anyone had this problem before? I tried a quick search but it's getting late and I'm tired.

Thanks in advance.

Jon

The beta worked fine as did a perfectly(!) good installation of Vista that I scrapped so I could use XP and 7... wish I hadnt now.

I might try installing the 32big version tonight as I know that one works as I have it on my Media Centre (P4 2.8ghz 478).

I had a similar problem when Vista was first released. Turned out to be dodgy memory stick. It's possible you could also have a dodgy one. Have you tried swapping the stick out or ram any mem tests?

Not yet but it sounds possible as I'm having a few other problems. I'll give it a go tonight and see what happens.

My machine just seems to be very lacking at the moment so its a possibility.

Update: tried running memtest but it wouldnt run, it flashed up blue then rebooted, it did this on both sticks of ram in different slots.

I have found out that it appears to be a problem with UAC as I cant make any changes to it. Whenever I click on the link to change settings the border of the window flashes and just goes back to the user screen.

Friend of mine has the exact same issue after upgrading from the Beta to the RC (using the version workaround). Anyone got any ideas?
