Windows 7's SP1

Hi folks!

Windows 7 is brilliant! At long last, I can feel the efficiency of Windows OS. Maybe, previous experience in Vista is comparatively less desirable which makes me feel so relaxed and happy now with the new OS.

4GB and 8GB with SSD do make a difference too.

I have a question though, about the SP1.

According to MS official website, SP1 can be downloaded separately, also there are many files for SP1 instead of 1 single file. If I have updated Windows according to Windows Update, do I still need to download and install SP1?

Thanks in advance!

Windows SP1 will appear in your update list at some point. You can download and apply it, normally I update from the update centre.

I do not allow windows to install updates itself without approval though.

You can get it manually from here. Just make sure to pick the right one (32/64bit).

As above, it will eventually appear in the update list, but I tend to install it manually and then run updates.

Echoing what's been said above, the best solution is to install windows using a Windows 7 SP1 DVD, this way, it'll already have SP1

Thanks for all the replies.

Do not click download if you are updating just one computer: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is by turning on the Automatic Updates feature. You can use our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you. If Windows Update is not offering you the option to install the service pack, see KB 2498452. If you are encountering a problem when installing the service pack from Windows update, see Troubleshoot problems installing a service pack for Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Yea, and without an SSD or fast hard drive.. It's going to take awhile to install :p

Welcome to the world of service packs. :p

That's just because the redistributable download is huge compared to the one you're likely to get off Windows Update.

Personally in the day of fast broadband I don't think it matters, plus I tend to download the redist and keep in on a USB pen for any future reinstalls anyway.

Even though I don't have the SP1 installed, Windows 7 performs beautifully specially boot up time, very fast. And everything seems to be swiftly done.

It also works very well on my Alienware MX11 R1 which has a Su7300 only and 4GB RAM, yet very crispy.

Same thing I do, apart from I stick it on another partition on my system! :D.

@OP. You can do either, but depending on how many reinstalls you do, its always nice to have it already downloaded and ready to go :)
