Windows 8.1 and sharing usb drives to SMB

I've asked this question a number of ways but still getting nowhere, I thought it was to do with mklink but the problem is actually not as deep as that.
Trying to media share between windows 8.1 and a Popcorn Hour media streamer (its based on Linux) and uses samba to access windows shares both ways
I have windows 8.1, I plug in a usb drive and format it NTFS and make sure permissions are set to everyone and also the user POPCORN (i've done this to eliminate problems for the moment)
I add a folder, name it media1 and share.
I also the same for a folder on my D drive which is internal and call it media2

The popcorn can see media2 but when I access media1 it gets a "request can't be processed"

Other windows PC's can see both shares, but the popcorn via samba can't.

Any ideas? I've googled this to death, played around with security and permissions but still getting nowhere.

It seems to me that windows 8 has some sort of security layer that blocks shares to samba across to usb external drives but I can't figure it out :(

Bit more work today and I think I'm closer.

Seems linked to IRPStackSize, now what I have to do is figure out what value it should be... had it as 33 earlier and could see a usb share! But not always, so close.
