So yesterday I checked Windows update, Found around 8 updates, Installed and then when it came to boot back into the desktop I was greeted by a black screen, I couldn't even boot into safe mode, Recovery options did not work at all.

I know MS released a few other updates a few weeks back that bricked peoples Windows installs, Maybe there are more now ?

To avoid this in future how would I fix this problem as I have since put Windows 7 back on.

Sounds like the Black Screen of Death, I had the same thing with a laptop I was handed to try and fix. I ended up just wiping it and starting fresh, if you do a Google search you will a lot of other people having the same issue.

is it the one with the mouse cursor but a black screen?

that would allow boot to safe mode, but it can be a pain simply because it boots too fast for f8 to get the screen [specially with fastboot].

reset to get rid of fastboot [via reset button, or removing laptop battery for a bit], get into bios, then exit bios and immediatly mash f8 as fast as ye can. nothing happens try again.
