I have Windows 8 and have it downloaded and stored on my NAS. However I want to do a clean install and would prefer to start with Windows 8.1, which I have not downloaded yet. So my question is this. Can I download 8.1 from MS and do a clean install with that, using my current key, or do I need to go 8 then update/upgrade to 8.1 which is of course a pain in the backside.

I have a 64GB USB that I plan to put the upgrade on, just wanted to check if I can simply download 8.1 and install that using my software key. I did this at the weekend, but then broke it today again (don't ask) so need to do it AGAIN.

Thanks, seems I do have to go Windows 8 then 8.1 unless I am willing to buy a fresh version of 8.1. ****socks.

Hi Housey,

I have the same thing unfortunately.

It seems bonkers that the Windows 8 keys don't follow through onto the 8.1 .iso installs.

I have to install 8 and then let Windows Update do its thing if I reformat.

or install 8.1 from iso using placeholder keys, (google)
then activate your original key when os installed, thats what i done

I have done this many times as I have a windows 8 key and it works just use a place holder key and then change your key after the install
