Just putting a new system together with a licensed copy of Windows 8.1 OEM. After an hour or so messing around trying to get setup on a USB stick for installation, surprise surprise, the product key doesn't work so I can't install. Anybody know if something funny happens when you install from USB? Wouldn't have thought so but it is MS..!

Cheers

i'd heard of problems with people using 8 keys with 8.1 media but if you have an 8.1 key, i'd have thought it would work??

anyway, the solution for people with a windows 8 key is to use one of these placeholder keys, depending on which version you have.

core: 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
pro: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

you should then be able to change key to your own one later.

Ordered the 8.1 full version from OCUK but the key is no bueno :(
Will have to wait until tomorrow to get in touch. Very annoying!

Quick edit - If i get somewhere using one of those keys, I will then have the option to activate using my own key?

yep, you won't get very far trying to activate with one of those keys i posted. :p

i'd definitely try it first before contacting OcUK.

Well it's installing so that's good progress. Thanks for that speedy reply. I've spent ages looking for clues without getting anywhere!
