I have 8.1 installed and a photos folder with a lot of photos etc in it.

Problem is when I open the folder and try and move the images into folders or just generally do anything with it the folder closes and shunts me back to desktop. Any ideas?

I had a very similar problem last week with a few folders on 8.1. I tried all sorts of things and couldn't get it to sort itself and in the end I gave up and reinstalled Windows.

As well as the issue you describe I had a weird thing where if I clicked to go into a folder, the folder would open two new versions of the same folder in separate windows.

Not a lot of help I know but before you do anything else I would try and get a back up of those photos (and anything else) somehow, just in case it gets worse like mine did.

I think my problems started when I installed the latest update for StartisBack, but I'm not 100% sure, have you got that installed?

The first time I noticed it was shortly after I installed the update, I tried searching to see if others had experienced similar but couldn't find anything.

Mine didn't do it with every folder, just 4 or 5, with some folders it shunted me back to the desktop like yours and with others it opened up the two extra versions of the same folder.

List non-standard programs you have installed that interfere with Windows Explorer.

As a work around, you could use something like 7zip File Manager to move them.

I ran into an issue a short while back where I had downloaded a .mov file from email (it was a legitimate file - no malware or anything dodgy), and then every time I opened that folder, Explorer would crash. I didn't even have to try to open the file. Just opening the folder was enough to cause problems.

There were a few Google hits on it, but eventually I just used the command prompt to delete the .mov file and then normality was restored.

If it is a video codec issue, then turning off previous should solve it until you find the culprit.

Cheers for all the suggestions guys. I made the changes in my NAS then sync'd them back. Interestingly opening a folder on my NAS with the same files suffered no such problems.

Well this started happening on both my onedrive and desktop folders. Only the ones containing a large volume of photos. It would open but any attempt to do anything and I'd be kicked out and the folder would close.

Anyway I have found a solution. In the settings tab for the folder I changed it from optimise folder for photo's to optimise for general documents. Now works fine. Only sharing in case some other poor soul comes across this thread whilst pulling their hair out!

Bit of a thread bump here as once again pulling my hair out.

I have a couple of folders with a few thousand pictures in them, roughly 3000. Everytime I open the folder to try and sort them, move them or simply look at them it crashes to desktop.

I've tried running ccleaner and setting the folder type to general instead of optimised for photo to no avail.

Any ideas?

Do you have any codec packs installed? If so, remove them.

Could also try..

Disabling thumbnail/previews in explorer
Creating a new user account

A normal Windows install shouldn't do this.

You could also use a 3rd part file explorer, 7-zip has one..

No codecs installed, unless GeForce experience uses some?

Will try both of those options, cheers mate

It's a normal fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro having recently swapped out my motherboard.

Will also try 7-Zip. It's really strange it's driving me crackers
