Hi all, My Windows 8.1 PC has has been freezing a lot just lately and I suspect, something software related is causing the system to crash and I can not interpret the dump files.

Also it randomly restarts which is annoying as I need the PC for college and I have tried Linux on the same machine and works perfectly.
I only have office, steam, games. Gfwl installed for GTA IV and Fable 3 as well as my AV and drivers.

Please help as it is doing my nut in and I am very tempted to give it to the scrap iron man. I will also be able to supply dump files if needed.

There is no OC, Memory is fine as that is new and has tested with all passes after being ran for 48 hours with memtest, CPU is also fine as I ran the Intel diagnostic tool, PSU is fine as tested with a multi meter and voltages are within the correct range.

Motherboard seems fine yet it seems strange that it works fine in Linux but not Windows 8.1.

Edit: it works fine after a reformat for a few days before the issues start coming back

Well something your installing is cause, if your OS is legit and not a modded cough copy then MSCONIG and look at 1st 3 tabs to boot up selectively and see what's the cause.

other option is to do a system restore back to when the system was working fine and see if this helps.

with windows 8.1 you can do a whole OS reset without loosing data so this maybe worth a try as well.

try doing a system check, run this is command prompt

sfc /scannow

i had the same issue, looked in event viewer and it turned out two components of comodo firewall was causing the issue (geekbuddy and dragon). Uninstalled them but kept the firewall and windows worked fine
