Hello,

I understand windows 8.1 will launch next week, 18th October.

Any idea if you will be able to buy a boxed retail version of it on that day ?

Also what's the price ??

Looking at building a new PC in a few weeks.

Thanks Ben

I think I saw $119 quoted somewhere, no doubt that will be the standard version though, I'd imagine it will be priced the same as Windows 8.

kind of like a SP but it brings more features and updates the kernel. yes 8 user can download it on the october 17th

Not Necessarily!

I am not too bothered by most of those, but I am a bit ****ed about the start button thing (Its presence should have been the users choice in the first place and its absence should be the users choice now! )

And I am also ****ed about the loss of "System image" (Especially since, for some strange reason, I do not seem to be able to get "File History" to work properly! It creates the appropriate directory structure on the destination drive, but doesn't actually save anything! But that is another story!)

I am a fan of Win 8 but I have to admit, it's downright incompetent of MS to recognise the HUGE rift between Start button/Menu fans and those who don't mind and NOT give the option for either/or in Windows 8.1.

Have a look at Macrium Reflect.

I thought the whole point with 8 is you could do the whole refresh stuff, granted that does not help if your drive has failed, but never used system image, always just do a fresh install if drive failed, with USB sticks, SSD's can have an 8 install done in about 10-15 mins

Just ordered my retail copy of 8.1!

Microsoft Windows Pro 8.1 64Bit English DVD
Mnfr# FQC-06949
£104.99 inc vat&del

Microsoft Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Edition is £60 at Tesco..I'm sticking with win 7

I have installed this and its installing as a standalone dvd, its activated as soon as installation is complete and i am just putting 8.1 on now but I'm pleased so far.
