Does windows 8.1 come in a retail package ...reason I ask is there is six desktop computer in the house and when upgrades are purchased the old kit filters down the chain but I don't want to have to buy windows every time I give the kids a better motherboard and chip

many thanks

8.1 version only comes as one version now. there is no upgrade/retail/oem.

like the old retail versions, you can change the hardware as many times as you like

As somebody whos just upgraded my Dads PC from XP to 8.1 32Bit, I wish I'd got him Win 7 instead, he can't get his head around the new look & feel of 8.1, as a 7 user, I should have realized this and pointed him in that direction....

Does that mean windows 7 oem is as good as retail version or just windows 8

Many thanks for your replies

It always was unless you're anally retentive about Microsoft's EULA which would probably laughed out of an EU court anyway, hence their lack of enforcement of such terms.

You can reinstall all versions of every type of windows as many times as you feel like it.
