Windows 8.1 - start menu won't work?

Hello.

Had a bit of a game installing 8.1 last night as none of my apps worked in 8.0 so had to re-install windows which then allowed me to access the 'store' to download 8.1.

I've now got it installed and the start menu is there but the only things I can use under the start are run, search and shut down.

If I click on any of the other items in there i.e system/device manager it does absolutely nothing. Its not the end of the world however just a little annoying that its not working?

Any help please?

Yes mate, everything else opens fine just not from the start menu.

I do but not going to bother if thats what it requires! Bit of a joke really, I had to do a full re-install of windows 8 yesterday so my apps would work and so I could access the store to download 8.1. I've since had to re-install everything that this lost and don't fancy doing it all again.

Surely every time I want to do something I don't have to re-install windows and start again?

Thanks for the replies.

The computer was built brand new and is running windows 8 pro 64bit.

Nothing is running over clocked or anything like that. The computer runs fine doing everything it should and is nice and stable its just the start menu that's not responding?

I did a fresh install off the windows disk yesterday which resolved my apps not working and installed 8.1 fine. The start button works fine and I can use the search, run and power buttons from it but not anythinfn else.

I don't have a clue about kernels etc and to be honest have no interest in all the really technical aspects of how windows works as it was never my plan.

I fully agree there is clearly a problem somewhere.

Can I revert back to 8 without doing a full reinstall and try reinstall 8.1 again to resolve the matter or do I have to do a fresh install of 8 again and then 8.1 after?

If there's anything specific you need to know to help me please let me know as I say I'm not the most tech savvy I'm afraid.
