My brother's PC had a few updates on Tuesday. He installed them but after it finished and rebooted, after the login screen he was greeted with a black screen. He can see and move the cursor still, and left it for about half an hour with no changes. I can bring up task manager as normal with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, and Ctrl +Alt + Del still worked so I can reboot/turn off the PC. However trying to enter safe mode comes up with an error when it reaches the login screen, so I couldn't access it. I did a system restore and that worked fine. After searching around for solutions, I removed both AV (Avast) and GPU drivers (AMD 6850) and attempted to update again, but the problem still happened. So tried another system restore so I could try each update one at the time, but this time, it couldn't find any restore points to restore from. In the end I did a clean install and that's working fine.

And then a friend called me today with the exact same problem with his sister's PC, Windows 8.1 again. Only similarities her PC had is an AMD GPU as well as Avast. Did anyone else come with the same problem?

I'm now scared to update my laptop which also has Windows 8.1 :p.

Ahhh that it explains it, almost forgot I had that installed!

Updated it on my laptop, and did the Windows update, working fine now, thanks!
