If anyone can shed some light on why Win 8.1 is so slow that would really be of some help. Here is what I know.

These are the facts:

1. Windows 8.1 was performed as an upgrade from Windows 7 – I selected the option to keep my documents and settings

2. The version I bought was the download version

3. My PC Specs are in my sig – I have not upgraded the BIOS on my KOBO since I have had it. 3 years? Never had a problem though. (just putting this out there)

4. I have a Crucial M3 SSD 60GB free space

5. I have 3 other internal 3.5 HDD’s – One of which is being recognised on and off, sometimes gets recognised as a USB device sometimes as a drive.

6. About 4 days ago windows asked me to register a Microsoft account? I think because I bought an app, it now asks for a password when I log on etc, maybe not a big deal but I am throwing it out there

7. Nothing else really to report in terms of hardware and oddities. Everything seems to be working fine apart from that drive. I have not done anything about it though.

8. Everything ran like clockwork under Win 7

These are the symptoms:

Slow to boot up sometimes, this issue has got better but sometimes I just sit there and stare at the monitor. Nothing happens apart from my desktop loads. I can use the IE and Chrome etc but everything else is slow to open. Then out of the blue everything will start up, ESET, Catalyst drivers, etc etc all the stuff I have in start-up. Like I say, this seems to have got better but happens maybe once a week.

For a few weeks Windows 8.1 was closing really fast. When I selected shutdown the thing was off before I could blink. Now it takes 5 mins. There seems to be no disk activity during this time, then the monitors will go off but the PC is still on for another 2 mins, then there is a flurry of disk activity and the PC will turn off!! Very annoying.

Light room seems to take a longer time to load, when I try and import pictures it takes about 1 min before it gives me my drive options (maybe that drive that win 8.1 is having issues with?)

Dragging files around is very laggy, if I want to drag a RAW file from one drive to another it seems very slow.

The Recycle bin is also laggy, when I right click there is about a 5 second lag, then when I select empty there is another 5 second lag.

All very annoying stuff. I’d like to hear your thoughts. I see other experiences like this when I do a google search but no real answer.

Latest SSD firmware?
Any nasty errors under the System tab of Event Viewer?

It may be worth doing a clean install.

I have hopefully solved the issue. I spoke about having a sata drive that was not bring recognised all of the time.

I went ahead and disabled it last night and instantaneously things went back to normal. Hopefully this has done the trick.
