Windows 8.1 Upgrade -Steam/Origin/UPlay Question

The biggest reason to me for not upgrading the base OS on windows is the crud left behind. Things like WinSXS and the dll library spiral in size during upgrades and are just wasteful. You'll likely have to go through quite a long upgrade process for those on rotational drives too.

I never had a problem upgrading from 8 to 8.1, all games and software were just as they were before.

Same when done either through the Windows Store (at Home) and via an ISO (work).

I that Win 8.1 mouse lag in games thing fixed 100% now? i.e. without having to do anything special after installing windows, or having to make changes per game as I seem to remember to had to do before?

not all is fixed i made a massive post on the microsoft forums about it. some titles are still effected.

for gaming in general win 7 is still better. ive used every version of win8 from upgrad to fresh install 8.0 , 8.1.

I have to disagree. I find games play much smoother on Wins 8.1.Newer games on wins 7 play sluggish

The issue I was referring to was the mouse DPI scaling issues with Win 8.1 causing odd mouse behaviour in certain games, rather than graphical lag. If this was 100% fixed without having to do any manual jiggery pokery I would very probably install the copy of win 8 I've had since it came out.

That is just a retarded comment as this is a stupid reply.

8.1 is way better than 7 in every aspect of gaming.

Also 8.1 is a lot more stable now than it was on release and its free which makes upgrading now a no brainer.

I'm going to upgrade to Windows 8.1 at some point in the next few days and I was wondering if the Steam/Origin/UPlay games I have installed on my mechanical HDD will continue to work once I have installed 8.1 and re-installed Steam etc onto my SSD?

I assume you're upgrading from Windows 7, right?

Then the way to do it is to upgrade to Windows 8 first, then upgrade that to Windows 8.1.

Yes from Windows 7.

And I can't do it that way, I have a Windows 8.1 ISO on a USB for a fresh install so I'm going to do it that way.

But its not though is it? Gregsters thread on the graphics section clearly shows the gains in fps alone in windows 8 over 7. For newer games the gains are quite substantial

Also, is it best whilst I'm installing 8.1 to disconnect my Ethernet cable? I'm aware that there can sometimes be problems with Windows automatically installing graphics drivers which you don't want.

I never had mouse lag issue in win 8 ever. My 8.1 install on my SSD also boots in about 4 seconds lol, crazy speeds. (not including post)

The mouse issue is a game specific problem. It's to do with how some games read the mouse pointer information. If it's done in a certain way then it can cause problems in windows 8.1.

Looks like they released a hotfix for it at the end of last year - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2908279

Theres an option as its finalising the install which asks if you want windows to auto install drivers. Just say no :)

Just a personal opinion, but I think people who favour Windows 7 over 8.1 haven't really given themselves time to get used to the newer O/S.

Windows 8.1, particularly with update 1 runs so well and the search function makes finding programs a breeze.

I mainly use my system for gaming and haven't had any problems thus far with older legacy titles or newer games. There was definitely a boost in performance though, particularly in Battlefield 4.

Windows 8.1 gives me some extra FPS in BF4 so for me it's worth it for that alone.

Never had any issues with any games on 8.1.

Well, I wish I could say that my fresh install of Windows 8.1 went seamlessly, but as with all technology nothing ever goes perfectly! It was all going so well until I installed some drivers and utilities from my motherboard disc, then upon restarting I got a guaranteed lock up within 20 seconds of logging back on. So I restarted the installation process and haven't installed any of the drivers or utilities from that motherboard disc now, and things seem to be going well.

I've downloaded Steam and Origin (but yet to play any games as I have to re-download and install them onto my SSD of course), but I can't seem to download Uplay from the official website - I click on the Download Uplay box in the top right but it just takes me to halfway down the webpage instead...
