Windows 8.1 ( windows button)

I'm probably being a complete idiot but I can't find a resolution to this.
When gaming e.g (BF4) and I press the windows button to go to desktop I have to select the correct app ( e.g. google chrome) or I will end up back in BF4. It's quite frustrating. Basically I just want to windows key out to the desktop to do what I please without being redirected back into the game If I don't slect a certain application.
I hope I make sense.

Do you have any software for your keyboard installed, had a look in there?

Alt + Tab or Windows + D

I'll check Alt tab and Win D and report back. No keyboard software. I'm using some cheap £5 keyboard from argos until I decide on a mechanical.
