Windows 8 Activation

Have you tried to activate it?

They probably don't connect it to a network after it's built and OS installed.

OC leave your pre built build in whats called OEM mode or something else which i can't remember what after installing windows 8 and installing drivers, they put it in almost a pre environment so when you first come to turn on, you have to setup the language and username then enter the oem product key.

once you agree with the licence, it's then technically on hire, as you don't own the licence just have bought the right to use it etc,

the key get's either put on the side of the case, same as the old win 7 keys, or get's installed in the m/b bios.

the bios version is the one which makes upgrades to the main board etc a pain as it will not let you then use the same key in another build.

as it's oem so only for the pc is was sold for,

for those that think i make it up as i go a long :)

the interesting bit,

quote "The OEM license is actually non-transferable to another PC. When you buy a PC preinstalled with Windows, that version of Windows is only licensed for that PC and cannot be transferred to a new PC. The transfer of the license must accompany the PC it was licensed for. If the customer were able to get that machine fixed, they would simply need to call customer support to re-activate if there were changes big enough to merit PC reset or system recovery unusable.
So that option would cover a motherboard replacement. But what if the dead PC couldn't be revived and you wanted to install Windows 8 on another PC? You'd be out of luck.
The version of Windows 8 that comes pre-installed on an OEM machine is not transferrable between PCs, according to the Microsoft rep. "So if your PC was really put out to pasture, under the terms of the license agreement, you could not use backup discs to reinstall that license on another PC," she explained. "end quote

Odd that MS itself say the OEM/Sys builders versions that you buy personally are transferable, thought they tweaked the rules on OEM transfers to allow it? Suppose it depends how you get a hold of the OS itself and if its classed as a personal purchase or whatever I dunno...
In regards to Op just go through activation process and it should be alright.

Thanks for all your help/advice guys.
Im going to try that link that davieg has supplied to see if that works when i get home.

Just FYI, its the OEM version that was installed on it by overclockers and after doing a little more digging last night it says that the license is already being used.
Also, i've had a look in all the boxes and all over the tower and cant find the usual windows license sticker anywhere.
