I swapped my motherboard to a Gigabyte Z77-D3H from a Asus P8P67 and Windows 8 managed to load after automatically adjusting itself to the hardware of the new motherboard.

As I suspected however my machine now needed re-activation. I didn't do this straight away as I was sorting other things out at first.

A day later I took another look at my activation status and it now said it was activated despite me doing nothing to achieve this!

So obviously I was chuffed because phoning Microsoft on my mobile to re-activate would no doubt be costly and tricky because you have to enter numbers.

I don't have a landline phone but was considering phoning Microsoft from my brothers place but now I don't have to do this... yah!

when your doing activation over the phone, their is also toll free number 0800 which is not free from mobile and 01/02/03 number which is OK to call from mobile if you have minutes.
alternatively use the website call "say no to 08 numbers", which will give an alternative number.

As I say when I first booted the machine with the new motherboard Windows 8 sorted itself out in order to boot to the desktop although I still needed to install the Windows 8 drivers from Gigabyte.

Checked activation status and it said it was un-activated and advised me to enter a new key or buy a new one with the option of contacting Microsoft.

Was planning on doing so the following day but when I next checked activation status it was now activated which was great and saved me having to call Microsoft.
