Windows 8 as a NAS - having occasional dropouts

I've got a little ITX system that is the server for my house, and that I stream films etc from. Recently I moved to Windows 8 on that box for a variety of reasons, and broadly I've been very pleased. There is one issue though.

If I'm streaming a film, now and again I'll get a pause for a few seconds, long enough for the receiving computer to think the connection has been lost. If I then access the file again, it immediately starts playing.

I've tried all the things I can think of without success, so any views on how to configure Win 8 as a headless box for streaming files would be appreciated!

I'm using wired connections not wireless.
I've tried switching default priorities between Running Programs and Background Services without success.

I'm a bit baffled!

Possibly the disk spinning down due to "inactivity"

It won't do this if you're accessing a file from it, it counts as activity.

Tried updating all your network drivers?

Does eventviewer show anything at the times you get these 'pauses' ?

Good shout on eventviewer - there's nothing in there I can spot, but I'll make a note when it next does it and trawl all events around that time.

Cheers bledd.

Who makes your network adaptors? Get the latest drivers from the network chip manufacturer and not the motherboard site, they'll be newer..

Could also be a hard time drive problem on either machine, worth checking event viewer on both machines
