Has been playing with the Windows 8 beta today on a net book/tablet device which was my first experience of this OS and found one of the most important things has been changed dramatically. You can no longer click on the start button and get a simple but effective menu, instead it takes you to a weird screen much like that of a windows phone with the squares. There is no easy way of opening something from the start menu any more, not of what I saw anyway.

Has anyone else discovered this? Please share your thoughts

Start menu is show in the picture below :S

You're doing it wrong. That's the Metro UI you're in, there's a normal desktop UI in there as well.

And yeah, there's a massive thread already.

Beta/Developer, really the same kinda thing, both are showing what it may be like in theory

Not at all. This is an early development preview of the Metro UI. Nothing else.

A beta would be a "feature complete" but buggy release. This development preview is no where near the point where it could be considered as feature complete.

There was mention of a hidden search feature in the cut down start menu that appears on the desktop. Not on my Win8 machine so can't check it but apparently if you bring up the menu by moving the mouse bottom left (before you go to the start screen) and start typing a search box appears and you can get to apps from there?

Going blind on this so don't shoot me if this doesn't work!
