Windows 8 - Using Metro UI - 7970 artifacts @ idle speeds

UPDATED THREAD..

My setup - Windows 8 x64, Msi 7970 refrence @ stock. Everythings set at stock, cpu, ram etc. Temps all in order and there's no overheating.

Below are two different scenarios i'm facing at the moment.

Windows wdm drivers - idles at 500/1375 - no arficating in metro
12.11 beta 6 drivers - idles at 150/300 - artifacting in metro

The difference between the two scenarios are the clock speeds. The Beta 6's run at a much lower speed at idle, 150/300.

Video memory at 150mhz idle, I'm seeing artifacts appear in Metro. Metro probably doesn't like this low speed/low voltage. And the result is artifacts.

I could keep the memory at full throttle but as a result the temps are much higher.

The artifacts only appear in the Beta 6 drivers, with their fixed clock speeds runs the memory at 150mhz, opposed to beta 5 which runs the memory at full throttle. A well known issue.

Beta 5 shows no artifacts. (500/1375)

In Beta 6, Starting from its idle of 150mhz, Pushing the memory to its highest speed - 1375mhz, instantly eliminates the artifacts.

Question is, is it the card that's faulty? I need somebody who has a 7970 and is running Windows 8, with the beta 6 drivers at idle clocks (150/300) to test Metro for any artifacting. Any takers?

I've found a thread which seems to describe a similar situation, allthough he's using Windows 7. And he's using more than one monitor. I'm only using one screen. http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=22189v

LtMatt need your help on this one please! I don't know whether to rma the card. This happened with my previous 7970 too.

Windows 8 is new and AMD may not have drivers that work that well yet. Roll back to older ones until they have the problems sorted.

Thanks for your reply Gregster,

I just forced my 2d clocks to max speeds by running atitool in the background, I don't see any artifacts.

If I close atitool, so the memory returns to idle -150mhz, the artifacts are back.

This isn't solely a Windows 8/12.11 beta 6 driver problem. When I used Windows 7 with 12.8 drivers I had artifacts at 150/300 on the desktop. Flickering black shapes every now and then.

I can only think that the card is very unstable when the memory is sitting at idle 150mhz hence the artifacts.

Solved. Edited the ati overdrive settings so that the memory clocks at 650mhz opposed to 150mhz. Artifacts gone. I'm sure this issue arose because i'm running dvi-d @ 2560 x 1440, the memory just can't keep up.

Is there a better way to force the memory to run at 650mhz? Say in Afterburner?
