Windows 8 high RAM usage

My sister was bought a new laptop at the weekend with Windows 8 preinstalled.

After I had installed most of her apps on it I noticed that it was using 5GB out of 6GB of available RAM from bootup. No program showing in task manager was using anywhere near that total. After doing a few windows updates the problem was solved, until last night when it again returned after she copied her Itunes library to the HDD.

Also the HDD usage in task manager is sitting at around 100%.

The laptop is a Samsung NP550P5C (without a dedicated graphics card)

as it's quicker than page file etc, thats why having more ram is better than less for win 8 over win 7 as it uses it better

as always it goes to ram first then to hdd, after update it wouldn't have been needed.

you seem to notice it more with win 8 than on 7, try a usb data transfer of about 1gb file or more, you see usage go up to a lot more than win 7 for the same size file, so it seems to use your memory more than hdd cache / pagefile or at least it seems to utilize it more

I could understand it caching to the RAM while copying a file but it has high memory usage immediately after bootup when no other programs have been run.

well norton will scan all on boot as well, very heavy and in some ways too over the top for most, use norton corp, far better and less of a system hog, or just get another one
