Hi, has anyone got around to using windows 8 pro as their home server instead of home server 2011? I was about to build a home server based on home server 2011 and after searching for more info online and as I only need the server for media streaming I have now decided to get windows 8 pro upgrade for my vista licence and use the spare bits I have for the setup.

For use as a home server, as long as you don't mind adding functionality yourself the isn't much in it between them as WHS 2011 removed the drive extender feature of WHS (the best feature!) however as WHS 2011 is based on Server 2008 it "should" be more robust than a desktop O/S and it is easier to setup as its designed specifically for the task.

Windows 8 does have drive pooling which I will need as I expand my storage needs, so that and the upgrade price has made me prefer it over WHS 2011.

I'm using Windows 8 Pro on an HP Microserver because I changed a load of the hardware out and Server 2008 wanted to reactivate, and my source of licenses wasn't available, so I went with Windows 8. No problems so far, and you get SMB 3.

I considered Win8 as a server to replace my old WHSv1, but changed my mind. I read that storage spaces is slow on writes and that it was stopped from inclusion in WHS2011.

I using Nas4free now.
