When i first bought Windows 8 Pro & installed it i was like hmmm don't like this, after a few hours stuck Win 7 back on.

3 Days ago I decided sod it i'll try it again.

Now that i've actually this time spent some time with it, i'm actually beginning to like it even without the Start button, manage to get everything setup the way i like it including the Tile screen now with what i need quick access to like games ect.

Under the hood, it's a lot better than windows 7.

With time i can see Windows 8 getting even better, when more useful apps are added ect.

The problem with Windows 8 is most people don't like change, I'm included in that but if you do install it give it a chance you find it actually a very good OS when ya figure it out properly.

I can now say i won't be going back to Windows 7. :)

During the beta days there used to be an almost endless stream of people posting that they'd used Windows 8 for 20 minutes or an hour, usually inside of a virtual machine, and concluded that it was the worst piece of junk software they had ever used. There were even people who said they were the decision makers in their companies that had just poked about for an hour and then completely written it off.

My answer was always that you just can't evaluate it in such a short space of time. Now that Windows 8 has been out a few months it's interesting to see that trend has almost reversed, at least on this forum. A majority of people are now saying they like it.

I installed 8 on my old Dell XPS laptop and the general performance and responsiveness is very impressive.

I like the look of it but still not sure I'll be switching my main desktop over anytime soon.

I think a laptop with proper gesture support would be a big improvement as I find the horizontal scrolling to be a pain day to day, am sure a tablet would be very nice, I'm keeping my eye out for the Surface Pro, that could be where 8 really shows what it can do.

As it's on offer for £25 to upgrade, I've taken the plunge and I'm currently 75% through the download. I'm hoping not to be disappointed.

I figure I will eventually be using it anyway - for a price that low it's worth it to have the most current version of Windows.

I had a similar experience to OP. Just installed it, without really reading a thing about it. Saw the Metro screen for about 2 mins clicked on a random something and was suddenly sent to the new-old Windows Desktop. No Start Button? WTF!? Where's all me progs gone?! Couldn't figure out how to launch anything, find control panel or get back into to Metro.

Thinking that it was just a heap of junk and seeing as I had to get something done I just booted back to Windows 7.

Since taking a longer look at it, I rather like most of it considering it was only £25 squids. As said it's better than Win7 under the hood. Can't really see the point in Metro on a PC though, so just live in new-old desktop with Start8 running as a start button.

Miss the old System image backup - why o why did they have to nerf that?

same for me bought it at launch installed it had it on my system for 3 days didn't like it mrs didn't like using it either so put 7 back on. Then 3 weeks ago decided to give it another try and now i really like it so quick and reliable there's no going back now just took time.

It's still there and is called Windows 7 File Recovery.

You're right, so it is. But....Why did they call it "Windows 7 file recovery"?

I was reading something earlier and it seemed to imply you could only back up files in Libraries and I took that to mean they had done away with the System Image backup. Not really looked at it in enough detail.

Be nice to see a " Regular person " take some screen shots of it...and not the smiley faces ones Microsoft put out lol

anyway lol....any comments on Windows media player in win8 please ?

Got it installed now, and I feel scared and alone without my normal Start button :(

I like some elements of the new start screen, but I'm finding all the apps and stuff a bit irritating. Great on smartphones, but I think I prefer a good old fashioned web browser + bookmarks for the PC, if I'm honest.

I think I will end up using the PC as before, just with the Start screen as the new start menu. Does anyone know how to set the machine to boot straight to the desktop? It started up to the lock screen but I cant find a way to disable it - which is a stupid feature for a desktop PC, so I can't believe there isn't a way to do it. Have I just missed the option in my tired haste?

I don't mind Windows 8, but for getting work done I just feel my productivity is a lot higher on Windows 7. Early days though.

To get rid off lock screen - search and run "gpedit.msc". Goto: Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Control Panel / Personalization - Double click "Do not display the lock screen" - set option to enabled.

As for booting straight to desktop, there seems to be no simple way to do this. But if you install Start8 (http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/) it will give you back a very similar Start Button / Menu that you had in Windows 7 and will boot straight to the old-new desktop. This way you needn't use Metro at all. I seldom bother with it at all ATM.

The new W8 backup paradigm is called File History and it is basically a clone of Time Machine on OSX.

No idea why they called it that either.

Cheers, I'll try that when I get home.

Really need to get used to this start screen. I cant find a way to display shortcuts to some of my Steam games on there, which is irritating. I thought it would be simple to drag and drop an icon off the desktop onto the Start screen.

cool stary bra

Did this post make you feel amazing? Bet it did.....

So amazing.

You'll hate it initially.... Try not to fall in the trap of trying to use Start for everything, use Start as you would normally use it.

Cheers, I'll try that when I get home.

Right click the icon, pin to Start, same as its always been?
