Windows 8 install on 2nd HDD

And what exactly do you think "upgrade" means? You are upgrading your Windows 7 license to a Windows 8 license.
You will know longer have a Windows 7 license once it has been upgraded.
Please don't talk about a subject you obviously know nothing about.

Well as an outside ( who started this thread woops ! ) i have to say i agree with this ,it just sounds logical to me that once you upgrade to Windows 8 your License for Windows 7 would be dead :)

How will it break the licence if you're installing the OS onto a single machine? If you'll be upgrading it to Windows 8 then you'll still have your licence to use Windows 7 and use Windows 8.

The Windows 8 upgrade EULA does not say "your old CD key will no longer be usable" does it? If it did that's fair enough but if it doesn't then how will this break the EULA? You're still using it as an upgrade disc from a previous installation of Windows, you're also still installing Windows 7 on the same PC, how does this break the EULA? You can't install multiple copies on different PCs that's all.

Edit: Or if you're being too pedantic then do it this way:
  • Install Windows 7, upgrade to Windows 8
  • Install Windows 7
There, you don't have Windows 7 on the machine more than once at any one time.
1. you shouldn't be installing multiple copies with the same key / license on the same computer... it's one copy / license per computer

2. if u upgrade to another windows your previous windows license no longer exists

yes this is what i believe too :) if Microsoft let people have different OS on one P.C then they would have to let the big stores who sell P.C s to let a customer ask for 2 OS on the new Laptop etc :o

only way u can install 2 OS's is if you buy 2 separate keys/licenses

yes this is what i had to do for windows 7 i have a p.c upstairs with 1 copy of Windows 7 installed and my Laptop with another Copy of windows 7 installed ,so i have 2 different serial numbers and 2 licenses :) I can never understand how people can run illegal copies of Windows on the Home P.C its totally mindless in my views

That's all I wanted to know. No need for Stoofa to get headstrong hence why I said "If it did that's fair enough" in my post.

As far as I can tell from reading around there are 3 license types (excluding MSDN, TechNet etc) from MS this time round:

- OEM - Locked to the first PC it's installed on. Aimed at suppliers. The ones you used to have to buy a mouse with :-)

- Upgrade - Upgrades existing windows once, invalidating / replacing the old license. The ones they'll be selling direct digitally for £25.

- System Builder license - Aimed at home enthusiasts - similar to the OEM but portable like the old 'full' editions. Can install it as many times as you like so long as it's only ever installed on one machine at a time.

If I'm correct (and I may not be) then you'll need the third for your dual-boot. OCUK seem to be only selling the first 2 right now. If you go for the OEM one then technically you won't be able to install it on another machine if you change your PC.

Ok - thanks.

So, I have a Win7 home premium full edition that I got on the early £50 per copy pre-order deal they ran. If I get a Win8 Pro upgrade and upgrade my current PC, could I then at a later date build a new PC and use my Win8 upgrade edition on that PC? Obviously the old PC would not have any version of Windows on it so I'll only be using 1 copy.

If so, I'll probably upgrade. If not, I'll stick with 7 for now until I do next change my machine.

Read back your post that I replied to - you said no such thing.
You told the people of the thread how you could upgrade your license and then still use the license you upgraded separately.
Passing on incorrect information as gospel/truth is why so many people get it wrong.

Maybe you're the one that should read properly because it DOES say that. I'm not even going to bother responding anymore if you can't even be bothered to read things properly.

Edit: In fact I'll make it SUPER easy for you, and as you can see they're both QUESTIONS.

He didn't quote that though, he quoted a post full of questions and hacked at me, you gave me a straight 2 piece answer that I wanted and solved everything. If he did that in the first place then I wouldn't have had to even respond like I did.

I said the above as I thought that would've been OK but later asked why.
