Thought that might get your attention. 
No this is not an issue with Windows 8 itself, it's more of an issue with Office 2013 and Windows 8's Preview Pane on one certain machine.
With the preview pane enabled it comes up with this rather friendly message: "Sorry, something went wrong and Word was unable to start. (24)."
I have read all sorts of causes and have even updated Classic Shell from 3 to 4 on the machine in question to try to resolve this. Disabling Preview pane fixes this, but then you don't have the preview pane.
My laptop runs on 8.1 and has StartIsBack currently running (which is fantastic by the way, currently trialling it but may pick up a license during the trial). It does not suffer from this issue, so it can't be a Windows 8 flaw in general (unless it's fixed in 8.1? Though I doubt this is the case).
