Windows 8 license question

I am looking for sell my Laptop shortly. It came with Windows 7 and I upgraded to Windows 8 through the upgrade scheme. I also own another windows 7 license that is not being used.

I was planning (if legal) to restore my Laptop to windows 7 and sell it. Then on my new machine use my unused windows 7 license and my current windows 8 license to upgrade to windows 8.

Will this work or is my windows 8 license linked to the windows 7 license that was use during the initial upgrade?

that'll be fine. because you bought win8 separately (didn't come with the laptop)

you just may need to phone activate

You may be lucky and the Win 8 licence will work on a standalone fresh install since it already upgraded a Win 7 install. Well, it worked for my friend when he suffered problems from upgrading from 7 to 8 and used that chance to fresh install on a new SSD.

But yes, restoring the original 7 licence on the laptop should work fine.
