I now login using my Microsoft account. Does the OS authenticate against cached credentials stored on the PC or online authentication? If online, how does it authenticate if my ISP is down or my PC doesn't have an internet connection for whatever reason?

Probably uses cached credentials, you could also set up a pin I guess incase it doesn't, but I can't imagine Microsoft wouldn't have thought of everything since it's used on tablets which don't always have an internet connection.

It'll be cached, If you changed your details in AD or online but your machine lost its connection to the network/internet you would use your old password to login, when the connection is re-established it may ask you to authenticate your account by re-entering your new password (it does this on XP iirc)
