Windows 8 Network mystery

I am running a couple of machines (windows 7 and windows 8) and a Window Home Server (original!) I have the connector software installed on both machines, and both can access files on the WHS box. BUT... When I try to find the WHS box on the Win 8 machine it's not there! I can see the mapped drive (videos) and access files on it.

The screen shot shows 2 near identical windows side by side - the one on the right was opened using the folder icon at the bottom of the desktop (win 8), the other was opened using the shared folders option on the WHS connector software (again on the win 8 machine)

Note that the Server magically appears on the left hand side nav bar on the right window - but not in the network computers and not in the normally opened window.

It's almost back to the old win 95 days where machines would come and go on the network for no apparent reason - there should also be a network printer there, some days it is, some days it isn't.

Frustratingly, the Win 7 machine sees all devices flawlessly? I have found nothing like this via google - anyone else seen this recently and have a solution?

The media side of it makes an appearance under other devices (web based interface) and media devices (streaming side) - but it is invisible as a network machine - on the win 7 machine it (and the HP printer for that matter) it appears in the Computer section at the top where it should be.

Frustratingly - just like the bad old days - some days it just appears  (Click on the image to enlarge if it's too small!)

For comparison - here is the same network viewed from the Windows 7 machine: Link

Solved!! :D

In advanced sharing settings - HomeGroup connections - I swapped from "Use user accounts..." to "Allow Windows to manage homegroup..." and it all came back. Phew.
