Hi all,

I have an Asus N56 and on it they've implemented the genius idea just to **** people off of putting the serial in the BIOS, which then makes it extremely difficult to switch to a different hard drive or SSD (what the ****?)

So I'm struggling now with how to get my OEM copy of Windows 8 onto the SSD. I've extracted the licence key but gather I need an English iso of Windows 8 OEM, which I've not been able to find.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Cheers

As long as you have the key, you should be able to find an OEM version of Windows 8 via Goolge, however it will require using a torrent.

A standard Windows 8.1 ISO should do it, provided you change the key after installation to the one you extracted from the BIOS (RwEverything is the go-to tool for this purpose). I've just done a clean installation on a HP Pavilion x2 detachable tablet/notebook thingy using this method, and didn't hit any problems. Check out post #2 here for the ISO: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18619187

On another note, don't get me started on the ridiculous hoops you have to go through nowadays to install a clean version of Windows. And the Office 2013 installation rigmarole makes me want to stab someone in the face.

You can download W8.1 as a whole package from torrent sites instead of W8 and then upgrading to 8.1
Otherwise you can simply install W8, put your key in, do numerous updates then download and install W8.1 from the Windows store one your PC is fully updated.
Worst case scenario it wont accept your key and you'll be asked to call Microsoft, you tell them it's the same PC but you've switched to an SSD and they'll give you a code. Job done.

After a lot of trouble - and I mean a lot - I ended up cloning the original hard drive to the SSD, which seems to be working well.

But anyway I'd just like to say:

**** you Microsoft and your sh***y products that get worse every year.

I heard 8.1 requires a pre-exiting install of windows 8 to upgrade from. Is that not the case? Should it work with my OEM key?

Any other suggestions?

You don't need a pre-existing install of Windows 8, just use the Windows 8.1 (with upgrade) ISO in the post I linked to, install it using the right placeholder key (the instructions are in the download) and change afterwards to your extracted OEM key.

And you're welcome.
