I have been using Windows 7 (Which I totally Love from day one) for nearly 5 years including as beta tester. I didn't beta test Windows 8 because I couldn't see the point of it's mains features for a desktop user like myself. However I am aware of the improvements made since the first Beta versions.

However, I have had an email offering Windows 8 Professional pre-order for £49.99, is it worth try?

As far as I understand it, NONE of the versions of Windows 8 include WMC, but you'll be able to buy it from the store for a *nominal* charge.

Before spending £50 it may be worth downloading the trial version first.
note:the trial is enterprise not pro it is basically the same -media center.

Reading back what I've written, just for clarity it's still an optional purchase, but I think it's only available for Pro... why Pro only, I've no idea.

I've got ~£6 in my head, but I may just be imagining that.

Windows 8 Professional x64 RTM does have WMC on it, but had to use another product key for WMC to enabled addition features, it rather stupid from Microsoft to disabled WMC and have to purchase option for WMC. Rip off.

No, people have gone digital or use alternative evinces like DVD/blu-ray players.
As said you are mainly paying for the licenses to use such media which add upto a fair amount. MS don't wont to pay these for every sale as lots of people don't use it. So it is know an add on.
