Windows 8 - slow installs

I recently built a Windows 8 PC and remember some of the basic tools taking a long time to install - hours in some cases.

I have just tried to update the Catalyst 13.6 and the installation just sat there, so I left it for about 6 hours and it finished with an error. I'm still showing Catalyst 13.4 (drivers 12.104).

I'm having problems with the graphics in Ghost Sniper 2 demo and I'm going to throw the ATI video card away and replace it with a Geforce but are there any known issues with Windows 8 and installs of things like Catalyst and other tools.

Try a memtest86+ test to start with. See if it throws out any errors. It's unlikely to be an issue with Windows 8, but if you have a copy of Windows 7 you can install it might give you a base from which to run test tools. It would also be interesting to see if Windows 7 works ok on your system.

Cheers guys, any thought son why it only seems to be installs that pause for a while, everything else seems to run OK, even been running Ghost Sniper 2.

BTW the PC was built as a HTPC and has one fan in it, with masses of heat sinks, it is not overheating. It is - MSI Z77A, Intel i7 3770K, Samsung 840 250GB SSD, 16GB Geil memory, HD7750, Windows 8 64bit.
