Hi,

I will be buying an SSD this christmas and I am debating 128gb vs 256gb. I have some experience with Windows 7 on a small SSD but not 8.

Have any of you installed and optimised Windows 8 on a 128gb SSD? I am interested in how much HDD space it consumes, especially any power users that have tweaked the install to reduce space (I would try to do this).

Thanks

I would just get 256GB regardless. I've used/owned 64, 80, 128 & 256 GB drives and 256 is just about what I consider comfortable.

Windows 8 uses 16-17gb on my SSD.
My Windows 8 pro is using 27.5GB on my 128GB M4 SSD and I haven't finish installing all the drivers for my hardware yet.......

Only Installed it lastnight (Also includes windows media center)

You haven't removed Windows.old files after the upgrade. Use disk clean up, and click the clean up system files button in the window. You should be able to remove it and free space by doing that. Make sure that you have everything copied that you want/need from Windows.old before you remove it. Though Windows 8 upgrade should have taken care of that stuff, doesnt hurt to check it though. Windows.old can be found in C: Drive

Windows.old is basically a copy of your previous OS.

I did a clean install of win 8 pro to a formatted SSD..

I was about to say lol.

I have changed my pagefile down to 800mb min and 2gb max. I also have hibernation disabled as i don't use it.

I've got Win 8 installed on a 30GB SSD in my media centre with no problems :)

Realistically you want the biggest disk you can afford. With 256GB you'd be able to install just about everything to the SSD and reap all the performance benefits. With smaller disks you've got to decide what goes where, and you're constantly keeping an eye on how much space you have left.

The bigger the SSD the more downloaded junk you would just store on it...:p
Plus the bigger the SSD drive you use for your C:/ the more stuff you need to backup when formatting..;)

I use 128GB M4 SSD drives for my C:/ drives in my two PC systems and I don't really see the need for anything bigger.....
As I would need them to be around 2TB to hold my steam games..

I had installed win7 in a 16GB SSD including updates. Not much room for anything else but you could still squeeze office apps.
If you run a nice and clean system your OS files shouldn't take more than 30GB max.
