I'm curious to know how any windows 8 users here deal with uac?
I have mine on at the lowest setting but get quite annoyed with it asking me permission to open steam or a game.
not being overly tech savvy I'm not sure if I should just turn it off completely. From what I understand, even when turned off completely, its still on because of metro apps.

It is a hassle but at least you only have to do it once per game.

It's annoying as there was a script that could do it with one click but Microsoft did their absolute best to destroy it.

Afaik UAC is based on a authentication and companies can apply to have their apps marked as safe (therefore no UAC) but it costs apparantly.

Either you're exaggerating or something is seriously wrong. What else have you been "tweaking"?

I use the 'Notify me only when applications try to make changes to my computer' setting. I never see UAC pop-up when I open Steam or start a game.

Well maybe something is seriously wrong then because I have the same setting as you but when I open steam uac asks me if I want to allow the following program to make changes to the computer.

I don't know* but does the prompt have a tick box marked 'always allow this' or something?
Or create a shortcut to run the offending program as administrator.

*because I don't see UAC prompts, having turned it down to minimum.

Never used it - EVER!

Never had an issue and I go to some nasty sites I can tell you.

As long as have a good AntiVirus and a good firewall you'll be peachy

Of course Linux might be your friend also.

Any malware worth its salt would just switch off your AV and firewall if it found itself running as admin. Its kind of the whole point.

UAC is pretty decent these days, vista was a pain but 7 and 8 its pretty painless. Most devlopers are pretty good at getting there programs to work without elevation.

It should only prompt you if an application is trying to make system wide changes or put files in protected areas and if your getting prompts for just running an application then it suggests something is corrupt or something is trying to make system changes that perhaps shouldn't be ;)

Having used 8 since launch, and 8.1 since it was released, I really am struggling to think of any usual usage cases where UAC has popped up.

I make some registry changes regularly via regedit for my job, so I know I'll need to accept a UAC prompt for that... but other than that, I really can't think of anything that routinely prompts UAC to pop up.
