Hey,

When I upgraded my PC to Windows 8 via Microsoft's upgrade tool did I free up my Windows 7 license? as in can I use my old 7 serial number for a file server, or was it 'consumed' in the process

Cheers,
Andy

'technically' it's void as said but depending on how you did the upgrade it might not have been 'used'

I completely formatted my drives before I updated but not using my win 8 disk (I wanted to use my old xp code so I could continue with the win 7 if I wanted). When I did the install it didn't ask for any code (except win 8 one) and just required a reg edit at the end to get it to authorise (which some upgrades needed too I might add and widely shown on the web).

This basically means I can use my win 7 (well xp in my case) code still, albeit technically against the eula etc. Not that I do

If you formatted with the win 8 disk then theres a 'marker' left during install to say it was an upgrade. I found this out on second rig when I forgot to format with a non win 8 disk....
