Hello,

I purchased Windows 8 upgrade via the offer that was running at the start of last year. I would like to reinstall Windows after having a bit of a tidy up.

How is the best way of going about doing this? I was going to use the refresh/reset options in Windows 8 but have heard reports that this option will not work from a digital download rather than CD Media?

Would I simply be able to boot the install media that I downloaded when upgrading, and select the Custom option and do a clean install. I was not sure if this would activate successfully as it is probably an upgrade version?

Does anyone have any experience of doing this?

Thanks
Luke

Yeah should be fine, i recently did the same thing because as you mentioned Windows 8 refresh/reset is borked in 8.1.

I think its ok as long as you have a upgrade path to Win 8, it still works if you have 8.1 installed too.

You can download the install files here to make another USB install media device. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only remember to download the right one, as i dont think you can install straight into Win 8.1 with a Win 8 key.

Many thanks.

I'll download the file from the link and try installing that way. When installing using this link, did you have to perform an upgrade or did it allow you to do a clean install and still activate Windows without any issues?

I thought the install may not activate as the upgrade may detect that I already had Windows 8 on the machine and was not upgrading from an older OS.

Thanks
Luke

Even though you have Windows 8 on your machine already it should be fine, i had 8.1 on mine, and it worked. I used the USB installer method.

I just downloaded the ISO of windows 64 bit and did a fresh clean install and my key worked sweet.

Many thanks, I'll give this a try.

Just to confirm, have you guys been selecting Custom during installation, formatting the partition, re installing the OS and still activating okay?

Or are you just deleting the partition and creating a new one?

Thanks
