Windows 8 upgrade price

This seems to be aimed at Microsoft Store customers (these are Microsoft retail outlets in the US) so I don't think its applicable to us.

They did this with Vista > 7 as well.

No guarantees on the date, but they will 100% implement a system like this. It was £15 or £30 dependant on vendor previously.

Tbh, the big deal last time around was that manufacturers that got on board the program had to provide x64 drivers for windows 7 - where as they'd stuck to x86 for vista.

Since everyone has w7 driver these days - and lenovos can use of generic gpu drivers, it's no big deal. If ms follow the same pricing they did with windows 7 the price of 2 way posting of the laptop + upgrade cost will at minimum match, probably exceed, the initial pricing of windows.

As in, no point.

I agree im wondering why windows 8 has to come out so soon

Because Microsoft are getting slaughtered in the Os world. They are also back to there normal time frame after xp-vista massive time frame.

I'm just hoping they do the pre order offer again.

What makes you say that? they still have a 70-80% share

They do run iOS though. Meaning corporations get one support chain.

Share of what though, that's desktops.

Desktops are not what you need, you need desktops, tablet and phones. And Ms do not have a mobile Os and are being beaten into the ground. Mobile Os are growing at an enormouse rate and is affecting the way corporations use IT.

Just because there are no great Windows OS based phones does not mean the corporate market is suddenly going to ditch Windows as the desktop/laptop OS.
We only officially support iPhones & Blackberry here at work, unofficially I will give general support for Android (as basically there is no support required).
However we are not all rushing around trying to ditch Windows - and we won't be.

Ditching? Of course not.
Coporations don't ditch or change over night. It takes years of planning, even between one windows version and another.

However mobile devices is blooming and if it's not already, desktops market share will decline.
Also if Coporations and building and using iOS and paying for apple support. That will make them way up the option of ditching windows.

Quite simply unless MS act they are losing an absolutely massive slice of the pie, which will affect desktops in the future.

Windows division has already been slumping, profits have been down 30%, compared with its entertainment section which has almost doubled profits. They're also being beaten by Apple in revenue and profit. Ok big differences. But Ms have to protect the selfs, not looking to the future and sticking with w7 for longer would be cutting their own legs off.
It's a balancing act, and while many on here look at here and know. Coporations and developers look into the future.
