So I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 8 and I seem to have run into a few issues.

First, I'm using a 256GB Crucial M4. I was going to secure erase it before upgrading but I couldn't get Partition Magic to boot from a DVD I burnt.

So I said nevermind and just installed Win 8 from a bootable USB.

I got one blue screen the first time I tried to install it, didn't even get to the language screen.

Did a reset and managed to get it all installed, then got a clock_watchdog_timeout blue screen.

I tried downloading the AHCI drivers. I think I got the right ones. I downloaded the Win 7 64bit version of Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager Driver V8.9.0.1014 for Windows 7/Windows 7 64bit. from the 'Chipset' category on this page

Now in my device manager it says Intel(R) ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller in the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers category.

I ran the SFC /SCANNOW command and that came back clean.

I followed a guide to check the SSD alignment and all the numbers came back clean / divisible by 4.

I've not had a blue screen for the last hour or two and I've installed a load of stuff through ninite, but Windows doesn't seem to be working properly. Loads of buttons I click don't action.

I can't change my account picture on the start screen
When I search for settings in the start menu and click them they don't load. To get the the windows update screen I had to open another control panel setting and then navigate to it.
Every time I load IE it gives me an error saying my default search provider has been reset.

Would not secure erasing my drive really cause all these issues for me? :(

I think the install must have been borked.

I just reinstalled again, it didn't go smoothly, I had to restart a once when it seemed to freeze, but now everything it booting and the buttons that didn't seem to work previously now work.

There's also a ton more panels in the start menu. There was only 3 the first time it installed, IE, desktop and store.

Now there's 20 :-/

Fingers crossed it's sorted now.

It also has Windows 8 Pro build 9200 in the bottom corner, which it didn't have before...
