hi all ill be getting windows 8 soon once my new rig is built and ive seen on the web that you can do a full install on a new hdd from a upgrade disk using custom install then reg edit after. is this true it could save me a bit

thanks

Upgrade don't give you a full install, i have to install W7 first then install W8 after (digital upgrade).

You'll need the full install/retail/digital W8.

Upgrade does just as it says.

Unfortunately, your information is wrong as you can use the upgrade version to install on a new computer (but it won't activate until you've done what comes next) and then get it activated by first altering an entry in the registry and then running a command in an elevated command prompt and restart to complete the process.

so I can use the upgrade disk ? the only other way I can do it is install win xp but it will be a pain in the arse as its the original xp without service packs and getting sata drivers in. then upgrading sp's then win 8 just don't seem a good idea

Can you use the upgrade disk to do a fresh install? Yes
Does it require a registry workaround to activate it properly? Yes
Should you use an upgrade disk to do a fresh install? Microsoft would probably say no.

I do a fresh install with upgrade, and dont even need to do a reg workaround for activation..it activates just fine?

Have seen this happen if the upgrade has already been activated once using the workaround. Can't say I've had experience of it working first time without it. I'm no expert though. :D

To my knowledge, at very worst you'll need the workaround if using an upgrade copy.

If you want the 64-bit version of windows 8, doing an upgrade from XP will only result in having a 32-bit version of windows 8 installed but the OS doesn't even need to be activated for the upgrade to take place (I managed to upgrade a XP pro that wasn't passing genuine checks at the time (it was in the past, but that was because it was using an abused key) without any problems) so you can download a generic windows 7 disc image (you can get these legally from digital river) and install that without activating it then proceed to do the upgrade.

ive got a genuine vista key on back of a broken laptop but no vista disk I spouse I can hunt down a vista disk image

Is the Windows 8 upgrade license tied to the same restrictions as OEM?

The windows 8 OEM has fewer restrictions then previous windows OEM's (license can be transferred from one computer to another), and I think it's the same for the upgrade (as long as it's removed from the other computer).
