Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

I'm staying with Win 7. I found win 7 functions just as quick as Win 8. I didn't use Metro at all. I couldn't be assed with all that full screen swapping. Great for phones and tablets, but not for my desktop, gaming rig.

Well thats pretty decent, strange a half price difference.

Gonna be an interesting time when this all arrives, its must have been a massive effort, Win8, WP8 Win RT etc.

Microsoft can confirm that UK customers who have bought a Windows 7 PC since June 2nd 2012 will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for £14.99 via windowsupgradeoffer.com . In addition, from October 26th 2012, UK customers with older Windows PCs will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro via an electronic software download for ERP £24.99. Additionally, Windows 8 software will be available for sale from participating UK retailers.”

Profits straight to MS and gets more people to buy, no making anything physical.

It's windows pro for 24.99 and I've also seen reports that look solid, that it will include WMC for free, which after the deal will be a paid add on.

I will be.

I think the new metro system is really good for searching for stuff, as good as the mac system!

I find it very useful as you can snap one of the metro apps to the side of the screen. I had my emails open in the left "snap" pane and word open in the main window - very useful :)

The clean look and the efficiency on system resources is excellent.

The new task manager is very good as it gives a lot more information.

I LOVE when you copy files across as the new graph is lovely :D

I just hope in an imment update they change the search slightly, either dispaly everything, or if no results, change to one of the other things. It's not a big issue, but would be nice.

Why is there no retail version?

Shh, they've simplified the lineup. Don't give them any ideas!

Seriously though they got rid of the retail version because most people qualify for the upgrade anyway, and they modified the OEM license for the nutters who actually build their own PCs.

Oh and it's the first step towards offering Windows as a subscription.

I might upgrade for £25 but as yet haven't really seen why I'd want to. I liked elements of Windows 8 but hated others, they half-baked the new interface, should have done away with a desktop entirely, my biggest gripe though was just how tacked on the interface felt and the use of corners would take some getting use to.

Undecided for now, want to.. but still not managing to push myself into it!

I think this one should have been kept for phones and tablets but saying that i was looking at a windows phone the other day and it looked awful i will be sticking with windows 7 until i see an improvement in the next version of windows

looks horrendous no matter what's "under the hood"

I don't have a touch screen and don't need my pc to looking like a mobile phone. Esp a windows phone :D

Also I got Win 7 retail for 49 quid how is the "upgrade" to win 8 more than this?

That's where I disagree, wife has a phone running Windows 8 and it works brilliantly on it. I'm just not convinced yet that it's suitable for a desktop PC.

I'll be changing, purely because it's new and some of the features are quite good.

I'm hoping apps will improve over time and although I probably don't really need to upgrade as such, it's going to be the norm like 7 is currently at some point.

I have a convertible touch screen ultraportable that I may buy it for. My desktop though will be staying on windows 7 for the forseeable future.

Because you lot are clever, and know everything :D, I thought it easier to just ask this here.

I've got a couple of Vista 32 OEM's kicking about. Can I upgrade one of these to Win8 64 for 25 squids? And do I have to install one of them first? I've got a PC running the preview at the mo and I want to get it onto the final version when it's released.

Cheers.

This tablet/mobile phone OS is running better on my PC than Windows 7 ever did so I don't know what some people are talking about.

If you don't like the UI then just say so but don't pretend it isn't a superior desktop OS.

Not convinced by win8. It looks to me like an experiment that we have to pay for. I don't particularly want to join the tablet revolution, so I'm sticking with 7, and sending my (unheard) message to MS. Keep your tablet UI off my desktop PC :p

Microsoft is crazy at times. They make things hard when it doesn't need to be.

Seriously though they got rid of the retail version because most people qualify for the upgrade anyway, and they modified the OEM license for the nutters who actually build their own PCs.

Pfft.... who upgrades an OS? I preferred retail due to less complications with activations. Plus I still like to be able to use the previous OS. Not void a previous key.

You should be able to do it from the preview according to an MS blog post, but they've not confirmed how you'll verify the license you're upgrading, I suspect you'll be asked for the key.

Don't know whether it will allow 32bit to 64bit, but I'd guess it will give you the option if detects your key is 32bit Vista and you're currently 64bit preview.
