So my Windows 8 just started freezing randomly earlier and after a hard reset I'm getting either the chkdsk or else the "repairing disk errors. this may take a long time" errors. I have let this run for a good few hours but nothing is happening.

I've already tried fixing the boot settings with bootrec /rebuildbcd etc but no luck. What could be causing this or how can I avoid these checks?

Obvious thing that could be causing this is a disk failure as stated by the errors. Have you tried scanning the disk for bad sectors, etc?

chkdsk gets stuck on 40% and goes no further. Really annoying.

I would probably say that means that your disk is on its way out, Its probably
stopping when it gets to a chunk of bad sectors that it cant pass so its just
hanging there.

I would recommend getting a new drive before it goes all together, I would
recommend a SSD if you want something fast. Go for an M4 or Samsung one.

I already have an SSD in it although it is relatively old now. At least with a traditional disk you can judge from the sounds that it isn't healthy. When it was freezing there was nothing suspicious logged in the event log at all.
