So... my PC has decided to start complaining that Windows Firewall is not is not active... it doesn't seem to recognise the Kaspersky firewall any more. Just for my peace of mind, is this simply a bug with Windows, or might there actually be a problem with Kaspersky?

So your using Kaspersky internet security. Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling using the latest version from their site below?
