Windows activation conundrum!!

Wondered if you can help me guys,

I want to reinstall windows XP home edition but I have lost the serial number that came with it (basically I just have the cd now).

Is there a way to get the serial number off my pc at the moment before I wipe it and then use this to reactivate windows after a reinstall?
